To be succesful in the battle betwen you and Google bots , there are some thing that webmasters shoul do and some things that should not do.To get a position in first 20 Google’s search results,you,the webmaster, should follow some simple steps to be agreed by Google and to get a good position in first 20 search results.
The first and the most important thing that you should do it’s to create an unique site, an site that have something special but the site must not have an complicated structure.
Now let’s talk about the things that you SHOULD DO as webmaster :
-You should use internal link building ( use keywords in your posts and use them as anchor text for other posts on your blog)
-You should avoid backlinks from link farms. ( Read here more about Good Backlinks and Backlinks to avoid )
-You should organize some contests (contest are a good way to get backlinks and get a higher page rank and some visits)
-You should get involved in communities relevant to the content of your site. (Seo forums,Seo blogs)
-You should publish articles on other sites relevant to your expertise.
-You should learn from your competitors.This is very important if you want to be better that others bloggers or webmasters.
-You should try to include a few outbound links to high quality sites in every document.
-You should consider Google as one of your friends,not as one of your competitors.
-You should analyse your log files and see who refers to you the most. The referral information also reveals the keywords used to find your site. (Try to find more similar sites)
-You should make yout post titles relevant to your main keywords.
-You should avoid keyword spamming.
-You should avoid duplicate content.
After those things that you should do,there are many things that you SHOULD NOT DO :
-Do not link exchanges with sites/blogs that are non-relevant for your content.
-Do not place invisible keywords on your page or invisible links (white keywords/links on white background) , Google Bot sees everything.
-Do not submit your blog to Google twice .If you submit your blog to Google more than once you can say “Bye Bye!” to your Rank .
-Do not forget about the Meta Tags , the Meta Tage are the key in SEO .
-Do not get backlinks or do not exchange links with Porn Sites or Warez Sites,those sites are not agreed by Google .
-Do not use unauthorised computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc.
-Do not post too many links on a single page.(the lists may damage your Google rank)
-Do not put ads on it right away – Google marks those sites as suspected “ad farm” sites and won’t index them for a certain period of time
-Do not go for low-quality links with unrelated sites just “to have links”.
-Do not think that any links to your site are good for search engine ranking.

i thought some seo experts said that Meta tags are no longer valid, that it ended in 2002??

Meta should not be ignored, but it should be noted that Google ignores meta tags, and only sometimes uses the meta description as a ’snippet’ in the SERP’s.
That being said, Yahoo and Bing do still use meta tags, so don’t ignore them.
I would disagree with your statement that meta is the ‘key’ though, way too many factors involved in proper SEO, I won’t say meta is not important, but certainly not the ‘key’.

Or to the general URL submission link?
Or submission of a sitemap?

Nice tips, I agree that posting so many links can damage PR, I am writing a post about how much I hate long link list posts because a bad experience I had before and got lots of broken links!

I want to say that meta tags are still alive although Google doesn’t give much importance to them but they can enhance keyword ratio in your content.

Nice Website. You should think more about RSS Feeds as a traffic source. They bring me a nice bit of traffic.
