Digg Added NoFollow on All External Links

Digg is, finally, doing something to combat the large amount of link spam from their website and has recently added nofollow on all external links. This include links from comments, story links that don’t meet a certain level of popularity and profile links.

We’ve added rel=”nofollow” to any external link that we’re not sure we can vouch for.

Is this bad news for SEO community ?

Of course that’s bad news. Many sites will lose some important backlinks since old stories links, links from comments were dofollow and many of that pages have a very high PageRank.

We will see more social networking sites adding nofollow to all their external links ?

Probably yes.I think that Digg move is just the beginning and other important social bookmarking and social news sites will take Digg’s example and will make some changes, changes that will affect us all.

Google’s official, Matt Cutts says that Digg new change is a positive one and i agree because Digg is not was used to be, it’s full of spammers and low quality content.

However I’m curious to see how will Digg filter spammy content and which links will still receive some link love from Digg.

What are your thoughts about Digg changes? Let’s make a poll :)

I voted “I don’t care”, but that’s because I have given up on Digg. It loads too slow and I get constantly errors when submitting.
There’s no reason to spend time waiting on Digg when there are so many similar sites out there.. nofollow or not..

It’s a good change for them, and as a former top user from their community, I’m happy that they finally made the change.

Hey again @Tina! I totally agree that Digg is not what used to be and their “big changes” such as Recommendation Engine, are slowing down the site.
On the other part Reddit is doing a hell of a job keeping their website clean and simple.I am a Reddit fan :)

Hey @Jeremiah,indeed it’s a good change,it’s impossible for them to know where they link to.

    Hello Nice Blogger -

This is not good step by Digg. Digg blocked my two account. (That was my personal account & I never do spam activity over there). I can not understand why Digg added no follow on all external links. Because, there are many similar websites of Digg. I think user will transfer to other website. Because, I was so irritated from Digg.

    With all due respect!
I think this is really good for normal traffic that they will get very nice things now but as far as our (webmasters) are concern. It is really bad for us… Loose lots of precious time and earning as well…
    Too bad for us

That recommendation engine is a big part of it, I think. Most people stopped making the extra click to see unfiltered submissions so no one was really burying the pure spam – and no one was looking at the good submissions unless they were submitted by someone with a huge network of friends.
They’ve misdiagnosed the problem and the link change won’t do anything but encourage people to rig the votes and buy their way to the top.

I have been unable to use Digg so this move of theirs doesn’t affect me. I could never get any submission from them, always had errors. So i suppose it is ok for me!

There was some speculation over on another blog that Google may have actually sent Digg a email / letter. This notification was to advise Digg that it was being seen as a hot bed of spam and Google was considering removing Digg from Google. I have no idea how true that is but that is one of the many myth’s circulating the internet.

    Hey, Nice blogger

I don’t care. It did not appear to influence traffic from Digg.
By the way, in your previous posting there is a dofollow blog list and what I would like to ask is the ‘Links PR6′ referring to links.org?
As I know links.org is nofollow. Am I right?

    Leo

  11. Nice Blogger (92 comments) says:

@Josh i don’t think it’s true. If would be about a possible penalty from Google i think we would notice a huge Digg PageRank drop before removing their site from their search engine,Digg is still a authority site so in my opinion this couldn’t happen.

@Leoramelow No it’s not referring to links.org,the blog from the list is links.org.au. Yes i see that links.org is indeed no follow. Great to have you here buddy!

I am preparing some updates about this so don’t forget to get my feed to receive them.

I don’t really care. I don’t have too much to do with Digg. I’ve submitted a few articles and used to have a Digg button on my posts, but I think that Twitter is a much better promotional tool.

You can look at this move like this.

One, it will provide better content for those engaged in actual “socializing”.

Two, since Digg is a major SB player, I’m sure others will follow.

Good or bad? Guess it just depends on what you use Digg for I imagine.

I really don’t care. I will not put all my social book marking eggs in the Digg basket.

Look, if you want to get traffic from social book marking, BM at as many quality sites as possible.

Diggsuckers. I don’t get why did they do that.

  19. PhCreative (1 comments) says:

Digg has always been there but i’ve never used it proeprly even though I tried. I’m guessing it’s losing members these days anyway, there’s too many other ways to share things and I don’t think it’s ever been that good for getting a backlink anyway. There’s much easier and more relevant ways of getting backlinks.

  21. Evan Carroll (2 comments) says:

I believe this is a great move by digg — unfortunately it is Google forcing digg’s hand to stab them in the back. The incentive is there to spam these link aggregators because Google is rewarding link nets. Link nets are a great way to establish credibility, unfortunately removing link nets will leave google scratching their head to think of a better paradigm to replace them. In essence, yes, links might encourage spam, but to discourage linking or to encourage webmasters to devalue the links on their site is ultimately the poison that will ruin the magic juice that makes google tick.

We need a better matrix for page weight: content on the page, meta-data about the page, and now links to the page have all proven to create a burden on anti-spam efforts. Maybe we need a less-subtle more active method of using people to judge if the content is good? Oh, wait, that is what ever other social engine is already doing.

People were abusing the privilege and it needed to be done. I don’t hold that against Digg at all. Besides, if your articles are really worth anything, they’ll benefit from being popular on Digg anyway. They’re just weeding out the spam.

  23. Blog About Everything (1 comments) says:

This seems to be the formula nowadays for social bookmarking, get people to provide your site with quality content then down the road switch it up and penalize the same people that provided you with the content.

The whole thing about the spam is bull crap it should be expected you are going to get spam if you allow do follow , knowing this then why not start out no follow from the beginning? There are certainly ways to combat spam.

Niceblogger, I suppose it is not nofollow for all outgoing links. it is for links with low quality. I suppose they have internal algorithm to decicde this nofollow attribute.
I answered YES. Because many users will now stop to spam digg. I hope it will happen.

That’s what I so admired about Johnny Cash and June Carter. Their music wasn’t a big influence on me. It was their character, their individual styles, what they were like as people. They weren’t afraid to stick out.

Voted ‘meh.’ I never really use Digg for rankings – but a quickly submitted and Dugg story was and is the fastest way to get a new site indexed. This still seems to be the same, despite the nofollow.
