What is more important,number of backlinks or their PageRank?
Any incoming link is important but its more important if is relevant to your website. An incoming link from a relevant site carry more weight than a regular link and if the page where your link is placed have a high PageRank is outstanding. But the most important aspect in SEO is how you link back to your website, the anchor text is what makes the difference.
Let’s say that you just finished your “movies blog” and what to rank high for this keyword in search engines.You’ll need quality backlinks with this anchor text, simple as that.
Having your link on a PageRank 8 page with anchor text “click here” is worser for SEO than having your link with anchor “movies blog” on a Pagerank 1 page.
Of course having a backlink from a PageRank 8 page will give you some pagerank points and some authority in Google’s eyes but for SERPS is useless and you’re after traffic right?
Quick tips:
- Don’t use same anchor every time. If you want to rank for “movies blog” use “movie blog”, “blog for movies” this will help you rank for primary keyword as well.
- Get links from different sources.Three backlinks from three different sites is better than ten from one website.
- If you can and it’s allowed try to get deep links instead of linking to your site homepage.
- You need only Do Follow links since No Follow links don’t pass PageRank or anchor text.
So build links wisely,you need relevant backlinks with high pagerank and proper anchor to do better in search engines.

The thing about anchor text is that all the search engines care about is whether you are giving out relevant information and if your link accumulation is natural.
When you have 500 links all with the same anchor text it looks really shady and unnatural.
However, If you change up your anchor text and even throw in some odd text from time to time then it looks like your link is being spread through the web by real people.
If I target some backl inks to my article, then I usually target about 20 variation, with 3 or 4 occurring more commonly than the others.
I even get a few nofollow links from social bookmarking sites, becasue that looks natural.
Natural link building = Winning strategy

Does it really matter if the site in your movie example sells chocolate as long as the hyperlink is my relevant keywords?
@Stephen Great to see you again! Very good points,search engine crawlers are not that smart so anchor variation really does work. It’s good to pick 2-3 long tail keyword too and use them as anchor sometimes looks more natural than just one word.
@Hallow Yes it does matter,it’s great that you got a link but a important factor is link relevancy.You will not get penalized for building links on non relevant sites like some people talk,the link is still important but would be more important if the link was coming from a site related to your niche. Great to see that you’re a regular reader!

I think it’s a combination. You need to have useful anchor text on high PR pages that are relevant to your site. Having a huge number of backlinks is supposedly helpful for other search engines, such as Bing and Yahoo, but quality links beat quantity on Google. Even without focusing on PR, I moved a client site from page 14 to page 1 of search results simply by getting links (I’d say less than 20) with good anchor keywords on very specific, relevant sites.

Thanks a bunch for sharing this tips. Most of us forget the relevant content matter totally when it comes to obtaining SERPs. I always insist on updating the blog with fresh content every now and then so that it attracts visitor and entice them to make quality and relevant comments which are contributing to the post. Your do follow list is a crackerjack and i checked almost all websites and found them possessing good content. Hats off for your efforst man. I thin new bloggers must make it a practice to visit your blog to gain niche seo tips.

I agree about “relevancy” of links especially for “Google” when you are dealing with blogs/websties that lies in the same niche or at least keywords that you are targeting, and I think this keeps the those linlks ‘natural’ in the eye of search engines!

I agree that good backlinking campaigns are vital for IM success. I have found though that it’s quicker to get a ranking boost by anchor links on unrelated high PR sites as it’s hard to always find one that relates to your website. Just as long as the site is high PR and it’s dofollow, google loves it.
I have a question though – is it possible that backlink juice also gets passed on from pages that get crawled but don’t end up indexed? I’ve been doing a lot of social profiles with backlinks lately but apparently google only indexes a few….? It’s driving me nuts.

These tips are really great and having a dofollow blog like yours is pretty attractive to those who are after the link juice but keep in mind that this goodwill can be abused. I used to have keywordluv plugin installed but I’ve taken it off since I caught commenters leaving their Names @their keywords using different “anchor texts” for the same URL which I think is abusive and disrespectful of my appreciation for giving commenters some link love. This made me turn off the keywordluv plugin and stop accepting keywords in the name field instead of real names.

It’s amazing how many PR=0 pages are linked directly from high PR pages. I really don’t think that Google regularly updates the PR. And there’s a good chance that PR is actually tracked in real time in the Google back office. So I think any page is a good page for a link, assuming it isn’t nofollow.

Its the perfect combo – High PR links, include the keywords in the anchor text and try to deep link with good on page SEO pages with keywords in title, URL, meta tags and H1 and H2 tags.
If you do that then you’ll see the difference and get some google love!

Making an anchor text more than one word is relevant in do follow. Using different anchor text is another. Backlinking is one way to increase traffic as well as the rank.

Search for the terms “click here?” in google and you will get adobe website. it is because many people link to adobe site with click here as anchor. Hope you guys understood the importance of anchor text. Thanks.
These tips are beneficial. I could not agree more with the use of these back links and do follows. It has significant effect in SEO. As much as everybody wants to have that high PR, it is necessary to maintain that present state knowing all of the tips you’ve given and be able to apply it in link building.

Both are important in some way. Although, PR change inevitably. However, back links also matter in link building. As much as everybody would have that PR at the top, its lucky spot being able to maintain it.
