I have seen many articles about how to increase pagerank and i must say that some of them are completely wrong or even useless.I took my time to write hopefully, a complete article about what is pagerank and how to improve it.Let’s face it this kind of articles never gets old.
What is pagerank?
PageRank is one of numerous methods Google use to determine a page’s relevance or importance.Pagerank is based on inbound links not on the number of them but on their quality and relevance.
Some things you should know about pagerank:
Content updates doesn’t increase pagerank,content is not part of pagerank calculation. Link exchanges count much less than one way links.Sub-directories don’t necessarily have a lower Page Rank that root-directories but in most cases they do. Links marked with rel=nofollow will not pass pagerank.You can see what nofollow and dofollow means here. A high pagerank doesn’t mean high search engine ranking,most people think that. Multiple outbound links from the same page cost as much as a single one. Pagerank flows within a site,so when new pages are added one or more existing pages will suffer a pagerank loss. Meta Tags don’t improve pagerank.
How to improve your pagerank:
- Submit articles with your website link to article directories.This method will give alot of backlinks and traffic. Here is a list with most popular article directories.
- Take your time,research and write useful content and you will see that other bloggers will link naturally to your post.

Bookmark your content in dofollow social bookmarking websites. Traffic will come too!
- Sponsor or buy custom wordpress themes and give them away for free.Submit them to wordpress themes directories,you will have a link in footer of every blog that uses that theme.
- Add you link in signature or profile and be active on dofollow forums.Tip: Create a wordpress.org account,add your link to your profile and be active on wordpress and bbpress forums,they are dofollow and many pages are pagerank 5 or 6.
- Blog commenting – Probably the easiest and fastest way to get quality related backlinks.The guide i have written will easily help you to find dofollow blogs related to your niche, you can also search on Google there are plenty of dofollow blog directories or blogs lists.
- Submit your blog or site to quality web directories and blog directories.
- Review websites or services that you liked there are good chances that you will get a link back.
Well probably these are best methods to increase your pagerank and get some traffic to your site.

Yes, that is a good list of tips. One thing I did not quite follow was: “Multiple outbound links from the same page cost as much as a single one.” Just not sure what you meant by that.

Nice post and great tips. Maybe you can also add this one to your list. Submitting original quality articles to specific sites in your niche and get a link back in your author bio. Your articles will also just remain unique to those sites and the backlinks will be more valuable as well. Can be time consuming but really worth it.

I actually have some questions that I need to get answered about upgrading my WP 2.7 to the newest version, so I need to head over and start participating. I appreciate the helpful advice. I am a new blogger. I submitted my site to DMOZ but I heard it can take months to get listed there if you ever get in at all. So far it has been 3 months, so I will continue to wait and see.

Simply the best advice for increasing PR i’ve ever seen.
It makes perfect sense, but it never occurred to me to implement signing in wordpress and bbpress forums. Those usually have tough policy. That tutorial rocked!

I would also add that multiple links to your page on the same site do not pass on more pagerank. Its not necessary to include multiple links, unless you’re using different anchor text keywords. In this case, although the page rank passed won’t be increased, google will still take note of the different anchor text being used.

If page-rank does not improve your rankings on Google – then what is the purpose of striving for a higher PR?
How often does Google re tabulate your sites page rank? Also should I rework past blog pages to have internal links or just leave them as is and implement new inter site links on future pages?
It is pretty hard task but your post and experience serve and teach me how to handle and make it more simple and manageable.

dofollow forums are pretty useless for linkjuice. Even if the forum has high pagerank, by the time the juice gets to your thread where your signature is, it is usually 0. Even if it has PR 1, it needs to be shared with 50 other people who are in the same thread.

I’m still learning all this page rank stuff. But I too have seen sites that are number 1 for their chosen keywords and they have a lower page rank. So does it really matter??

Excellent stuff. I find the best way to create backlinks consistently is to make an excel spreadsheet listing all your sites on the left and all the social bookmarking sites and forums across the top. Then once I bookmark a site I put an “X” in the corresponding box. Works like a charm because it inspires me to fill in each box.

Thanks for sharing. You’re absolutely right that Pagerank does NOT guarantee a high listing. I work with sites that have pageranks of 2-3 and they’re not even in the top 100 for their keywords.

Social bookmarking to 2-3 sites daily over a two month period is definitely the easiest way to really get a blog going, even if you’re lazy because there’s really nothing to it. Mix in a few decent blog comments and in a couple of months you’ll already be a page rank 1 for Google!

I understand now why some free theme have a link at the footer which said “sponsor by”, I think this is cool.
What about links to image store on a site. I’m thinking of hosting a site with some cool images people can use, any idea would this help in creating backlink to the hosting site?

With the being active on wordpress and bbpress forums… if I understand you correctly, you set up your profile with your website link and then make lots of noise (good stuff!) on the forums, this builds the PR of your profile page and increases the weight of the link out to your site from there??

What role does link exchange play in all of this? Am I OK exchanging links with a higher PR site than mine, or does ANY outbound link from my site harm my own PR, or am I OK as long as there are no outbound links on my home page/
